Early Language Learning: Multiple perspectives – Diverse voices
June 13-15, 2018. Reykjavik, Iceland

The School of Education, University of Iceland and the Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Institute of Foreign Languages are pleased to announce the third international conference on Early Language Learning which will be held in Reykjavík on June 13-15, 2018.

The conference will focus on early second and foreign language learning in preschool and primary education contexts across the globe. With this conference we hope to provide opportunities for colleagues from a range of professional backgrounds (e.g., researchers, teachers, policy makers) to establish links and expand the work in the fields of multilingualism, linguistic diversity and early language learning. The conference language is English.

We invite the submission of abstracts on any research- or practice-oriented topic relating to the learning of foreign, second or additional languages by learners of primary school age or younger (ages 3-12). Topics relating to younger or older learners (up to age 15) will also be considered.

We welcome proposals for individual papers, colloquia and posters. Abstracts for all types of presentations should be no more than 350 words, written in English and include the following:

  • Name and affiliation of the presenter(s)
  • Email address
  • Title of the presentation (max. 20 words).
  • Abstract: aims of the study, theoretical underpinning, methodology, main findings and discussion, implications for practice/policy and references (if included).

Abstract submission extended deadline: December 15, 2017

EECERA conference 2018

As in previous years, the EECERA Multilingual Childhoods SIG would like to organise one or more symposia at the annual EECERA 2018  conference in Budapest 28-31 August, 2018 – the theme this year is Early Childhood Education, Families and Communities –

If you would like to be part of a symposium related to multilingualism in early childhood education, please email Gunhild Alstad [] with a title and 250-word abstract by 1 February 2018, so that the symposium can be prepared in time for the proposal deadline, which is at the end of February. You are also encouraged to organise your own symposia, but do let us know about it so we can include it in the SIG publicity information.

Don’t forget, the Multilingual Childhoods SIG will be planning a pre-conference session on Monday afternoon, 27 August, so include this day in your travel plans!

We look forward to hearing from you and hopefully to meeting colleagues in Budapest in August 2018
